“There are all kinds of silences and each of them means a different thing. There is the silence that comes with morning in a forest, and this is different from the silence of a sleeping city. There is silence after a rainstorm, and before a rainstorm, and these are not the same. There is the silence of emptiness, the silence of fear, the silence of doubt. There is a certain silence that can emanate from a lifeless object as from a chair lately used, or from a piano with old dust upon its keys, or from anything that has answered to the need of a man, for pleasure or for work. This kind of silence can speak. Its voice may be melancholy, but it is not always so; for the chair may have been left by a laughing child or the last notes of the piano may have been raucous and gay. Whatever the mood or the circumstance, the essence of its quality may linger in the silence that follows. It is a soundless echo.”—West with the Night, Beryl Markham (via fuckyeahliteraryquotes)
I didn’t mean it. I never meant to hurt you that way. I know I haven’t been the friend you need at the moment. I wasn’t there when you needed someone. You came to me and I left you alone to deal with it. My own personal dilemmas are no excuse for shutting you out. I’m trying, I really am. I sit here, and wish you read this and know that you are a beautiful person who deserves better. and I love you.
Sometimes you look into someone’s eyes and you feel an instant connection. It might only last for a split second, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. She looked in my eyes, I looked into hers. We shared a little smile, like we knew something in that moment nobody else has ever known. Then we moved on with our day. The most wonderful thing about it is that I will never see her again. That moment will never be ruined by future disappointments. It will always be what it was, it will never alter. I thought about her just before I fell asleep, I wonder if she thought about me too. It was nice, stranger.
“I know you’ll help us when you’re feeling better, and we realize that might not be for a long long time. But we’re willing to wait on you, we believe in everything that you can do if you could only lay down your mind. I want you to try to help yourself.”—
